I am a teacher-researcher at the Faculty of Theater of the Veracruzana University since 2001. Previously, I have worked at other universities in Mexico such as UNAM, UAEMex, UACJ, UDLA-Puebla, and UIA-Santa Fe. In the theater, I began professionally in 1969 as an actor in the "Carpa Tayita" of the Padilla-Morones Company. Later, as a student of the Bachelor of Dramatic Literature and Theater (UNAM), I did university theater in the 'Carpa Geodésica' under the direction of Ignacio Merino Lanzilotti.
At the end of my degree, Master Rodolfo Valencia invited me to work on the Popular Performing Arts Program (1979-1985) of the Secretariat of Public Education as a stage director of indigenous and peasant theatre groups. In 1986, with several colleagues, we founded the National Theater-Community Association (TECOM, A.C.). Between 1985 and 1986, I had the opportunity to make an academic stay in acting and directing at the State Higher School of Theatre in Krakow, Poland.
Interested in the academic training of theatrists, I carried out my Master’s studies at the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico (UAEMex) with the thesis "The theatrical director: interpreter-creator" (1991), which was published in 1994. Later, already linked to research, I pursued my PhD at the Universidad Iberoamericana under the direction of the much appreciated Dr. José Ramón Alcántara Mejía (+) with the thesis "Theatricality, the basis for the analysis of the theatrical text" (2001), which the Universidad Veracruzana published in an expanded version in 2005 with the title 'Elogio del Oxímoron. Introduction to theories of theatricality'.
I worked from 1989 to 1993 as the director of the Rodolfo Usigli National Center for Theater Research at INBAL and was the founder and president of the Mexican Association of Theater Research for two terms (1993-1996 and 2015-2017). Since 2001, my practice as a teacher, researcher, and scenic creator has been based on Complex Thinking, drawing from the theories of Edgar Morin and the Transdisciplinary Methodology proposed by Basarab Nicolescu.
I am a member of the International Centre for Transdisciplinary Studies and Research (CIRET) based in Paris and the National System of Researchers of CONAHCYT. On June 11, 2022, we launched the Transcultural Scenic Movement Manifesto with Claudia Cabrera and Nicolas Núñez through a performance event called 'The new Nanahuatzin' in the Plaza Ángel Salas of the Cultural and Artistic Center 'Del Bosque'.
I have participated as a lecturer, speaker, and seminar leader in Congresses and Festivals in various parts of the world. Precisely at the International Festival of Progressive Theater of Venezuela, I gave the Seminar 'The theatrical system' from March 25 to 29, 2024, which sparked the interest in creating the Latin American Chair in Transteatrology, of which I will be the coordinator in the first stage. I am also part of the Scientific Commission for the creation of the International Network 'Theatre and Communities and Participatory Arts', to be formalized in October 2024 on the island of Madeira, Portugal.
